When Your Teeth Have Pitted Stains, What Should You Do?
Posted on 8/20/2016 by Jonathan Gantz
As you age, you will likely find your teeth darkening slightly due to the wear and tear of use. This process is accelerated if you drink coffee or tea, use tobacco, or eat or drink other foods or liquids that can stain your teeth.
This discoloration can usually be addressed relatively easily through the use of tooth whitening kits.
But what about if your teeth are unusually stained, and what should you do if the stains involve indentations or pits in the surface of the tooth?
Talk with your dentist. One thing you should keep in mind is that sometimes these conditions can be indicative of a larger underlying problem. You should consult with your dentist or dental hygiene professional to rule out any serious issues.
Once this has been done, your dental hygiene professional can review with you your options; these will vary based upon the severity of the staining and the depth of the pits. In minor cases, you may be able to have the stains bleached away by using a specialized bleaching process your dentist can review with you.
The pits-if they are shallow enough-may be able to be polished away; if they are very minor it is possible that they will be undetectable once the staining has been addressed. In that case your dentist may recommend just monitoring the situation until something further develops.
Severe cases may require cosmetic work. If the pitting is too deep, or the staining too severe, your dentist may recommend further work. You may consider having a veneer installed, or some other similar process.
Whatever your situation, the first step is to see your dentist. He or she can help you evaluate your case and assist you in determining the best course of action for you to take to restore and preserve your smile.
So please, contact our office today if you have any questions about the pitted stains on your teeth.
