Are Sugar Substitutes Better at Avoiding Tooth Decay?

Posted on 9/20/2016 by Jonathan Gantz
A bowl of a sugar substitute called xylitol. It has been widely known that sugar is essentially food for the bacteria that grow in your mouth and cause plaque and tartar buildup. However, since this discovery, many sugar substitutes have come out that are able to taste and feel like sugar to your taste buds but not act the same.

The question then becomes if those sugar substitutes are safer for your teeth than traditional sugar, or are they both essentially the same? Good question!

The Truth Behind Artificial Sugars

When you use a sugar substitute, you are getting a product that acts in the same way as sugar in terms of taste and often appearance, but that is where the similarities end. Sugar substitutes can be made from sugar, or items that are very similar to sugar, but they do not break down the same way that sugar would.

Basically, these fake sugars, if you will, do not have the ability to feed the bacteria that would normally live off of the sugars in your diet and erode your teeth. These sugar substitutes are safer in terms of how much tooth decay your mouth should experience if you stay away from refined sugars, but they are not safe for everyone to consume.

If you want to flip over to sugar substitutes, you need to make two appointments. First, you need to go and get a good checkup from your doctor to make sure there is nothing going on in your body that would not work well if you consumed only sugar substitutes. Second, you need to go in and see your dentist.

The only way for you to know for sure that this flip is helping your teeth is to be seen before you change your diet and again a few months later. Then you have a before and after to compare and judge for yourself.

Please contact us if you have any questions about sugar substitutes.
